How Much Can You Expect in an Advance?

If you're not reading agent Kristin Nelson's blog regularly, do check today's. She talks about the standard advances for various genres. All of which vary widely, she says. But it's nice to know what ballpark you might be playing in, isn't it?

And if you have time, browse her archives, which contain a whole course on the publishing business. Her advice can help at all stages of your career.

Hmm, very interesting. I assume those figures are in US dollars. I think I'd be happy with any of those!

Thanks for the link Anne!

I saw this and was a little down-hearted that romance was the lowest paying of the genre's. Of course that's what I write.

Yes, Simon and Emily, that's US $$--not your pounds or euros. The whole pay scale may be different in UK/Eire. My advances there were lower than the average advance here. But then, I was unagented.

PW, I think the low end figure for romance is for category romances, which usually have a lower word count and are published more like magazines than books--with the same short shelf-life.
