Yeah. I Kind of Hate This New Design Too.

Blogger tempted me with a handful of new templates this morning. I stupidly tried one out. And guess what? I can't go back. At least not without some secret code I can't find. So I'm stuck with this design that obliterates my profile text with my photo. Do I get rid of the photo? Scream and stamp my little foot? Give up and accept my blog is ruined?

I feel like I'm being Big Brothered. Or worse. I've just taken candy from that stranger and now he's whisked me off in his windowless van...

Anybody else fall into this trap? Have any suggestions on how to get my old design back?

  1. If you need help with blogger templates, let me know. I know how to work the system. :)

  2. Me, too. I applied one and it's okay but I wanted to go back and couldn't find the way!

  3. Anne, this is nice - a little linen and free-flight, but it is pretty. I LOVE the new look I ended up with: it's so me!

  4. I got hit with the same thing last night, but didn't like anything they offered, so I didn't change. Boy, am I glad now!

  5. Hahaha... Okay, I'm not actually laughing at you, it's just that your bluntness makes me laugh :-). I so enjoy your frank sense of letting it all out. And, sorry, I'm of no help at the whole blogger formatting thing. In fact, I'm notorious for emailing my web guy for any little blip, and my question is always the same: "Did I do that?"

  6. I kinda like it actually. It's very soothing.

  7. Thanks everybody. It helps to know I'm not the only one who got conned by the Blogger-bullies.

Michelle, I may have to take you up on that offer of help. I'm still playing with it, and I tried uploading a different photo, but the text keeps sliding under that one, too. Arrgghh.

  8. I like it. Green is peaceful on the eyes.

  9. I think the old Blogger templates (were they called Blogger Classic?) just no longer work full stop. The writer of diamondgeezer.blogspot.com was having serious issues getting all his posts to show up in the new template... don't know if you might be able to search over there and find some tips about keeping on working with old templates in new Blogger?

  10. It's got a light feeling to it, easy to nestle in and read your entries.

  11. Pretty!

Darn snazzy Blogger though with all the new backgrounds, I had such a hard time deciding myself...I'm still not totally sold on the one I ended up with. You're not alone!

  12. I don't know...I kinda like it. The color is soft and soothing. I really, really like the new photo! I don't know what the text is doing on your screen but on mine I don't see a probelm with anything being covered. Looks good to me!

  13. And, somehow I have a photo now. Hummmm...don't know how that happened!

  14. I've been too afraid to try the new design templates just for this very reason! Heck, I just now feel like I've 'mastered' blogger and now this?!?

But I do like your new look! It's very nice. You might try it for awhile to see if you get used to it.

  15. I tried shabby blogs which works on blogger. It might be a bit twee for some, but I'm a shabby chic kinda girl. Much easier to use than blogger templates and I like the look of mine now. I was so over my old look. I think blogger offers stuff before they work out all the glitches. They let us do that..:)

  16. Hey, thanks for the tips and encouragement, everybody. Maybe it will grow on me. I guess it probably doesn't look so bad on most screens. It looks OK on mine for about a half a minute and then it scrunches up. Probably because I've got an old square monitor.

Or maybe I'll try shabby blogs. I love the look of their designs. Thanks, for the tip, Aussie.

  17. Did you use blogger in draft?

Well should at least be able to go back to minima black or white and figure something from there?

Let me know if you need a hand - I'll try my best

    Also, I often use: Btemplates.com

They have a lot of wordpress templates converted for bloggers and they are gorg (my last few ones [before my current one] have been this)

  18. Hey Anne! The same thing happened to me and I really panicked! I thought I was just "trying it out" but it "took over" and there was no "go back" or "delete" kind of thing. I was really angry, because it also wasn't doing what I was clicking on and wanting! (I've got my old one back now, but can't really say how it happened! Sorry! I was clicking on everything!) I was just going to post about this problem today on my blog and warn everyone! I also looked in Blogger's Problem section and didn't see a thing about it, but that was a couple of days ago. I don't remember what your other one looked like, so I can't say if this is better or not, but I know it depends on YOUR taste and what you WANTED! Good luck!

  19. Emily, your blog is gorgeous and ever-changing: you're about ten grades above me in web design expertise. I don't even know what "minima" is. When I started on Blogger a year ago, I clicked on a template called "Scribe" and there was my blog: a little gothic and writerly, and reader-friendly. A lot of other writers used it too.

With this one, I chose a template called "Watermark," which was beige, and then changed the color palette and the text color--thinking I was just messing around.

Maybe this is a lesson for me about living with my decisions. Or that change is necessary.

Still, Becky, it makes me hopeful to find out you got your old one back somehow.

But as Christine pointed out, with this new one, I get to see all your smiling faces along with your comments, which never showed up before, so maybe it's not a bad trade-off. The palette really is kind of soothing. And it's more original. I guess I'll try to embrace the change. I did have the old one for a year. Maybe it was time for some sort of graduation.

  20. Wish I could help but I don't use the standard blogger templates. I had one of my blogs redone and then just tweaked that code for my everyday blog. I'm not good at html!

  21. Anne - let me know if you do need help though, especially in regards to btemplates - If there is anything there you like? It be no prob to help out (although my html is very limited)

  22. Thanks Emily. That's really kind, and I may take you up on it. Right now I'm seeing some potential here--maybe to add some more personalized stuff.

Blogger seems to function better with this new template, which is a plus, and readers seem to find it relaxing. I guess I'll give it a week or so before I start making any more drastic changes.

Thanks everybody, for you helpful suggestions and comments.
