Ditto for Jules Verne's works. But as publishing grew, difference types of stories emerged as separate genres. The "dime novel" western was hugely popular in the late 1800s. Science fiction (or "scientificion" as Hugo Gernsback tried to coin it) became a distinct genre only in the early 20th century.<br /><br />As readers (and writers) developed a taste for specific types of stories, publishers started catering to them. And sometimes the publishers are still behind the readers. "Paranormal romance" and "urban fantasy" have become accepted genres--but a lot of book stores still have trouble deciding where to shelve them. Fantasy? Romance?
